The fine print

How a ride is chosen

A ride leaves a terminal and comes back to it on the same day: one journey out to another terminal, then one journey back, with at least the 15-minute boarding allowance between them, home before midnight. The longest ride has the most scheduled minutes aboard. Waiting between ferries and time ashore do not count. Ties go to fewer ferries, then more terminals called at, then the earlier arrival home.

Each journey follows the planner’s rules for changing ferries: within one named terminal, 30 to 180 minutes between ferries, at most three changes each way. Separate terminals, such as Pier 41 and the Ferry Building, are never joined by an assumed walk. One way may take up to 12 hours here; the planner plans up to six hours, so a ride with a longer journey has no planner link. A ride from Angel Island starts and ends on the island.

A grand tour is a chain of two to six scheduled legs, one ferry each: the first leaves the terminal and the last arrives back there the same day, before midnight. It may pass through the same terminal more than once, the starting terminal included, but never rides the same sailing twice or the same crossing in the same direction twice. Each change follows the same rules as a ride’s: within one named terminal, 30 to 180 minutes between ferries, no assumed walk. The longest tour is chosen the same way, by scheduled minutes aboard with the same tie-breaks. Waiting between ferries does not count, and no time ashore is counted. A grand tour has no planner link; plan each ferry separately.

Before you rely on a ride
  • These are scheduled times from the published timetables, not live departures. There is no live vessel tracking, seat availability or guaranteed connection.
  • Every ride is for the date shown. Another date can have different sailings.
  • Check with the operator before you travel: SF Bay Ferry (opens in a new tab), Golden Gate Ferry (opens in a new tab), Angel Island Tiburon Ferry (opens in a new tab), Treasure Island Ferry (opens in a new tab).
  • Angel Island Tiburon Ferry (Tiburon–Angel Island) arrival times are approximate and marked ~: its timetable lists departures, and arrivals are shown 15 minutes later.
  • The Tiburon–Angel Island timetable is seasonal. Its 2026-10-12 to 2026-10-31 period has no sailings on Mondays or Tuesdays. Its 2026-11-01 to 2026-12-31 period has no sailings on Mondays or Tuesdays.
  • Time ashore counts the minutes after the 15-minute boarding allowance before your return leaves; 0 means the return boards exactly at the allowance. The allowance is a planning buffer, not an operator cutoff.
  • Rides are scored over every valid ferry path, not only the ones the planner suggests. A ride links into the planner when the planner can reopen both of its journeys by their sailings, up to 720 minutes each way, including chains its own search does not suggest; otherwise it says why.
  • These rides were computed when this version of the site was built. The planner refreshes its timetables automatically and may now use a newer one; if a planner link asks you to choose again, the sailings changed.
  • Fares are not shown. A ride on more than one operator follows each operator’s own fares and payment rules.
