YOUR GUIDE TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY

Make a day of the bay.

Be the captain of your day. Find your ferry, know your dock, and explore the other shore.

BEFORE YOU BOARD

The useful bits, all together.

Boarding

Your gate matters

The Ferry Building, Pier 41, and South San Francisco are different places. Alameda has three ferry terminals.

Explore this itemClose details

Start with the exact terminal in your result. SF sailings show the gate supplied in the timetable. Follow current dock signs in case the operator changes boarding arrangements.

Payment

Tickets, taps & fares

Choose the operator on your sailing. Clipper, contactless payment, and app tickets are not the same as a reservation.

Bank cards charge adult fares; use a discount Clipper card or eligible discount ticket for reduced fares. App tickets can cover a group—activate each passenger’s ticket just before boarding.

Golden Gate Ferry

Return planning

Need a ferry back?

Planning a return is optional. If you need one, check it before you leave; island and commute routes can finish early.

Explore this itemClose details

Choose one way or ask the planner for a same-day ferry back. Return plans include a 15-minute boarding buffer. Allow more time for parking, long walks, assistance, or busy days.

On board

Access, bikes & a little wind

Bring a layer and check any boarding assistance you need. Bicycle space is limited.

Explore this itemClose details

SF Bay Ferry and Golden Gate have accessible vessels and restrooms. Ask the operator about assistance for your specific terminal. Island paths can be uneven; Tiburon Ferry accessibility needs a direct check at 415-435-2131.
